Ironwood Brands | Independent Brand Audit and Growth Consulting

For Law, Accounting & Financial Advisory

Your expertise speaks for itself. Your brand should too.

Independent brand development for established professional services firms.

We work with partners and principals whose firms run on expertise, reputation, and the trust of clients built over years. What's changed is what now sits between the firm and the next client: the website, the search result, the visible specialty. The audit tells you what's holding the firm back. Brand Runway builds the position the next phase needs.

How we see professional services firms

Each one its own but facing similar headwinds in a quickly changing economy.

When the work is technical and specialised, the value can be hard to see from outside. So the brand carries weight before the work speaks for itself, and after the client has long forgotten their problem. The category has changed. The patterns below recur. How they show up in any one firm doesn't.

We keep seeing:

Your work is strong. Your website is almost invisible.

Most of the people who would hire you can't find you. Most of the ones who can don't see what makes you the right choice. The firm has earned more credibility than the website conveys.

The referrals carried the firm. They have stopped carrying it the same way.

The network is still warm. The pipeline isn't. The partners who built the practice still know everyone. The next generation of clients researches online first and doesn't arrive through the same channels.

Your specialty used to differentiate. The market has commodified it.

Larger firms have entered the space. AI tools have absorbed the routine work. The position you built around no longer holds the way it did, and the brand hasn't repositioned to where the work actually sits now.

The practice has grown. The website has not.

Senior practitioners are presenting through a digital front door that signals an earlier version of the firm. From inside, the mismatch is invisible. From outside, it shapes who arrives and what they expect.

AI is eating the commodity end of your practice.

The advisory end hasn't been positioned as durably outside the substitution risk. The work that paid for the team is being absorbed by software, and the brand isn't currently helping clients see where the human judgment still sits.

Most firms recognize two or three. The audit examines all five and ranks what's actually moving the business.

What we keep finding underneath

Three patterns sit beneath the five.

When the work is technical, the brand has to do work the work can't.

Clients can't directly evaluate the quality of a complex legal argument, a tax strategy, or an investment thesis. They evaluate by proxy: credentials, reputation, specificity, visible expertise. When the brand doesn't carry these proxies clearly, the buyer defaults to firm size or familiarity, neither of which favors smaller specialists.

Referrals built the firm. They were never going to scale it.

Referrals work until they don't. They scale with the partners' personal networks and plateau when those networks saturate. Most firms hit the ceiling, recognize it, and then look for tactical replacements. The structural fix is a brand that does work the original referrer used to do between introduction and conversion.

Specialty used to differentiate. Now it's a baseline credential.

Twenty years ago, naming a specialty was enough. Today, every firm in the category names one. What now differentiates is depth within the specialty: the named industry, the named problem, the named outcome. Firms that haven't sharpened past the category level read as interchangeable, even when the work isn't.

Something that doesn't fit the five?

Practicing in an area most outside the profession misread?

If your firm sits in a corner of the profession most outside it don't understand, or you serve clients whose work doesn't look like the standard cases, we'd want to hear about it.

From the Positioning Audit

A clear picture of where the firm currently sits, what's working, and what to change first.

  • A scored report across all eight areas, with evidence drawn from your firm, your clients, and the firms you're compared against.
  • A one-page description of who you serve, what you do for them, and why you. Ready to use on the website, in partner bios, or to hand to a copywriter.
  • A competitor map of the 8 to 10 firms a serious buyer compares you against, with their specialties, positioning, and visible expertise.
  • A 90-day plan, ranked by what's most likely to move new client acquisition and fee realization first. Not what's easiest to implement.
  • A live handover plus a written summary of prioritized next steps, delivered within 48 hours.

From Brand Runway

A position that sharpens what you do, with the content and plan to put it to work.
